Newbery Honor-Winning Author, Gennifer Choldenko, to Skype with Rosarian Academy 6th-Grade Students This Thursday

WHAT:

Newbery Honor-winning author Gennifer Choldenko has agreed to have a Skype discussion with Rosarian Academy’s entire sixth-grade class (44 students) this Thursday, October 12.  The students, together as a class, recently completed reading Choldenko’s historical fiction novel,Al Capone Does My Shirts—the first of her Tales from Alcatrez series. After originally denying Rosarian English Teacher Jude Valdov’s request to Skype with her students to discuss the novel, a classroom full of students sent the author a video request of them each holding a copy of the novel saying in unison, “We know you don’t Skype, but do you Facetime?” Honored by a positive response from Choldenko, the students will now have the opportunity to speak with the author and ask her some of their burning questions about the writing process, techniques, and characters from the novel.

Al Capone Does My Shirts was named as a Newbery Honor Book and the recipient of twenty other awards, including the California Young Reader Medal in 2007. Choldenko is best known for her Tales from Alcatraz series, which has sold more than 2 million copies.  Book #4: Al Capone Throws Me a Curve is due out in 2018. BookPage said of her most recent novel, Chasing Secrets: “Choldenko’s ability to research obscure yet intriguing topics is uncanny, and as she did with the popular Al Capone trilogy she turns a tough topic into a high interest read … a compelling work of historical fiction.” Gennifer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
