Advisory: Florida Crystals to Provide Hands-On Farm Experience for Rosarian 4th Grade Students

WHAT:

Rosarian Academy’s fourth-grade students will  have the opportunity to apply their studies across various disciplines to real-life experiences at Florida Crystals in Belle Glade.

South Florida External Affairs Manager for Florida Crystals Corporation and Rosarian parent, Caroline Villanueva, has helped organize and provide the entire experience for the students.

The day will begin inside the company’s agricultural center with a brief overview of Florida Crystals and the process of sustainably growing and harvesting sugarcane. The 34 students will then divide into four groups for a variety of hands-on and interactive experiences, including: seeing how drones take images of the fields to examine crop production and farm conditions; climbing inside a high-tech tractor and feeling how the seats move up and down with hydraulics; transplanting sugarcane seedlings into new gel nutrients in a real science lab; planting grown sugarcane sprouts into soil to grow in the greenhouse.

The field trip will include an excursion to either sweet corn or rice fields and lunch from Don Ramon.

The fourth graders have been studying Florida history and agriculture and using various pieces of literature to accompany what they are learning in Social Studies. They have studied types of energy in science. This out-of-classroom experience will add tremendous value to making learning come alive.
