Perhaps it’s fitting that sixth-grader Emma Chopin won the Rosarian Academy school-level bee with the word “deliberately.”
She has followed a deliberate path to the national bee, to be held May 26-31 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. ESPN will broadcast the competition.
Emma recently learned she had been accepted into the national finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee through a second-year program called RSVBee, an invitational program that opens up more opportunities for champion spellers to compete at the national championships.
Last year, more than 230 students competed in the national finals through RSVBee, including the 2018 champion, Karthik Nemmani, from McKinney, Texas.
To be eligible, students must attend a school that is enrolled in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program and be a school or community spelling champion during the 2018-19 school year.
After winning Rosarian’s school-level bee on Jan. 11, Emma went on to the Final Regional Southeastern Florida Scripps Spelling Bee on March 7 at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens. The first round of the regional bee included about 125 students from various counties taking a written test. Emma was one of 21 participants who made it to the final round which consisted of an oral spelling bee on the stage.
