Experiential learning is a core part of Rosarian Academy’s educational approach. While lessons may begin with concepts introduced through books or discussion, the majority of learning happens through hands-on exploration and real-world application. Students actively engage with ideas by experimenting, building, gardening, researching, and collaborating, allowing them to see concepts in action rather than simply reading about them. This “textbook-initiated, hands-on-executed” model deepens understanding, strengthens critical thinking, and makes learning meaningful and memorable.

Early Childhood

Rosarian’s youngest learners explored the process and benefits of adopting animals and even had the opportunity to select and “adopt” a stuffed animal. This experience extended beyond the classroom, encouraging children to apply what they learned by caring for their own pets and building independence, empathy, and responsibility. Students also spent time outdoors gardening by planting, watering, and nurturing seeds, discovering how plants grow through hands-on exploration and rich sensory experiences.

Lower School

In Lower School, students participated in gardening classes where they planted, grew, harvested, prepared meals, and tasted nutritious produce, connecting science, health, and real-life application. They built houses from recycled materials to explore architecture, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. Science lab experiments included studying blubber to understand animal insulation and exploring hurricanes to learn how and why they form and the effects they have. Students also engaged in Super Bowl-themed math lessons that developed critical thinking and problem-solving through real-world applications. In STEM activities, they programmed robots using LEGO and Bee-Bots to perform specific tasks, strengthening early coding skills, logical thinking, and collaboration.

Middle School

Experiential learning is a dynamic part of the middle school curriculum and takes place across disciplines throughout the school year. These experiences complement book-based study by helping students apply, retain, and transfer what they read into real understanding and usable skills.

In pre-algebra, students surveyed staff members and created box-and-whisker plots in Canva, learning the value of data collection, visualization, and design. In social studies and related coursework, they built dioramas to study holiday traditions, integrating research on historical and cultural context, including who, what, where, when, and why. Students also participated in immersive field trips to the Palm Beach Historical Society, where they studied local history, architecture, and government, and to the Holocaust Learning Experience, where they focused on empathy, history, and reflection. Overnight experiential learning trips to Circle F supported teamwork development, while visits to Washington, D.C., and St. Augustine encouraged civic and historical exploration. Rosarian middle school students were also recognized in the 2025–2026 DAR American History Essay Contest, winning three of four grade-level prizes and advancing to the state level.

Middle school students also benefit from experiential learning in physical education and extracurricular activities. They learn about nutrition and the importance of variety in food groups while staying active through games and sports. They track and analyze heart rate during rest and activity, connecting physiology, math, and personal health. Students have opportunities to learn from outside experts and organizations, including science centers, collegiate athletes, authors, lawyers, dentists, and medical professionals, who share real-world knowledge, discuss important topics such as recognizing and responding to anaphylactic shock, and introduce students to a wide range of career paths and future possibilities. These interactions give students the chance to ask questions, engage directly, and better understand how they might pursue similar paths themselves.

Service is another important dimension of experiential learning at Rosarian Academy. Students participate in a variety of service opportunities, including gleaning, joining community walks such as St. Jude and The Lord’s Place, collecting donated goods, toys, and books for organizations like Heroes 2 Others, Salvation Army, Food for Families, and Toys for Tots, and preparing meals each Wednesday for those in need at St. Ann’s Place.

The science department incorporates approximately one experiential learning activity per quarter. Middle school students have conducted mold labs by swabbing samples from everyday items, explored elemental properties through labs and posters, created renewable energy dioramas, and prepared for an upcoming Cell City Project. These activities turn abstract concepts into concrete, memorable experiences while deepening critical thinking and problem-solving.

The social studies department brings learning to life in engaging ways. “World International Day” takes students on a trip around the world through dress, food, décor, and displays from different countries, increasing engagement and helping students understand the real-world relevance of their studies. Civil War newspapers bring history to life, while landmark dioramas provide three-dimensional representations of world-renowned sites, supporting both content retention and historical understanding.

The English department reinforces this work by combining research, visuals, visits, creations, and presentations across a variety of crossover topics. Students participate in Washington, D.C., landmark presentations in the theater, thought-provoking skits on ancient times, dramatic poetry readings, and Holocaust book studies, along with museum visits and witness testimony. These experiences deepen engagement while strengthening communication and interpretation skills.

Spanish classes also embrace experiential learning through music, dress, cultural exhibits, and event-based exposure throughout the year. These experiences promote active participation and cultural understanding beyond the textbook, helping students better remember vocabulary and language structures by connecting them to meaningful, sensory-rich contexts.
