WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (September 09, 2025) – R-O-W-D-I-E, that’s the way we spell rowdy,” was the cheer that erupted in Rosarian Academy’s brand new gymnasium on Saturday, May 2, 2009, as the school’s official mascot – Rowdie the Raider – made its debut appearance. Fast forward seventeen years and Rosarian Academy is celebrating its 100th anniversary in a way that’s as bold and joyful as its century-long history: with a traveling mascot named Flat Rowdie, a playful twist on the children’s classic Flat Stanley.
The idea came from a 4th-grade teacher, who envisioned Flat Rowdie as a way for the Rosarian community to share in the school’s spirit no matter where they go, from Zimbabwe to local backyards in Palm Beach. “Flat Rowdie is more than a traveling mascot,” said 4th-grade teacher Mrs. Murphy. “He carries our history, Dominican tradition, and the excitement of what’s ahead. He reminds us that no matter where we are, we are united in celebrating Rosarian Academy.”
A Century of Symbolism
Founded in 1925 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, Rosarian Academy has been a cornerstone of Catholic education in Palm Beach County for a century. Its name and mission are rooted in the Rosary, honoring Our Lady of the Rosary, the school’s patroness. The school crest reflects this rich heritage: three roses for the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary; a fleur-de-lis for the Holy Trinity; an open book representing lifelong learning; and a background as beautiful as the Intracoastal the school overlooks.
Carrying this story forward is Rowdie Raider, Rosarian’s beloved mascot. Created by internationally known Marvel Comics artist Greg Horn, known for his work with Marvel and DC Comics, Rowdie proudly wears the school’s shield on his hat and stands tall as a pirate holding the Torch of Truth, a Dominican symbol of the school’s unwavering mission to pursue truth wherever it may be found.
In honor of Rosarian’s centennial, Rowdie “flattened” himself into Flat Rowdie, making it possible for the entire community to share in his adventures near and far. For this 100th year, his shield has been updated to feature the centennial logo, a reminder of a tradition that continues to inspire generations to come.
A Community Celebration
Rosarian’s community extends far beyond campus walls. Alumni continue to stay deeply connected, returning to work there, bringing their own children to experience the school, attending Mass, or participating in events year after year. Parents of graduates from decades ago remain engaged, sharing in the joys and milestones of new generations. “This unmatched sense of community stays with you, sometimes subtly and sometimes profoundly, guiding and cheering you on in all your future endeavors,” said Sophie Fountain, Rosarian Academy Director of Marketing and Communications and alumna, Class of 2013.
Flat Rowdie, traveling near and far this summer, reflects that enduring connection. Whether spotted at swim lessons, hiking in Yosemite, or in a hot air balloon across the globe, he proudly wears Rosarian on his sleeve, reminding everyone that the school and its community are always there. Through his adventures, Flat Rowdie shines a little light on the strength, support, and joy that come from being part of a century-old Rosarian family.
This centennial year is about history and heart. When we look at Flat Rowdie on an airplane seat or at the beach, we are reminded that Rosarian isn’t just a school on Flagler Drive. “It’s a living community, carried wherever our people go. That’s what makes this 100th year so meaningful.”
Flat Rowdie’s summer travels may be over, but his journey continues. As Rosarian looks ahead to its next century, he will keep reminding all who encounter him of a school grounded in faith, truth, and excellence, always ready for the adventures yet to come.
